Communications Strategy Consultant
Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ) seeks an experienced communications consultant to provide support to our communications team and to strengthen our organization’s communications strategy. The consultant will:
Conduct an assessment of the organization’s communications strategy and systems,
Make recommendations to the Communications Team and organization to improve GGJ’s visibility, story-telling and narrative strategies, and to support the organization’s fundraising efforts,
Support the Communications Team in implementing communications strategies, including but not limited to developing messaging and narrative, supporting writing and editing content, producing various materials for a wide range of audiences including GGJ’s members, funders, and allies,
Support the Communications team in developing strategies to grow our social media presence and followers base, to increase engagement across our social media platforms, and to increase traffic to our website for donor and broad audience engagement.
Support the team in creating pathways to engage audiences to become more involved with our work, such as taking actions and becoming donors.
Provide coaching and support to Communications staff and other members of GGJ’s team.
About Grassroots Global Justice Alliance
Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ) is a national alliance of more than 60 U.S.-based, multiracial, base-building organizations led by poor and working-class Black, Indigenous, Latine, Asian Pacific Islander, and Arab communities.
GGJ brings together grassroots organizing groups and global social movements advancing climate justice, gender justice, anti-militarism, internationalism, and a just transition to a feminist, anti-racist, regenerative economy. Through political development, movement alignment, organizing, and resource mobilization, GGJ strengthens the capacity of grassroots organizations to build collective power and advance transformational change.
Scope of Work
This contractor will support GGJ’s Communications Team in conducting a needs assessment of our communications strategy and workflows, bring recommendations to our team, and support in implementing specific communications tactics:
- Meet with the Communications Team and other GGJ team members to evaluate the strengths and needs of the team and GGJ communications strategies.
- Develop a set of recommendations that are immediately implementable, and others that may be implemented over time, for strengthening the communications strategy and workflows of GGJ. Test and evaluate outcomes of recommendations, and adjust implementation as needed.
- Support the integration of our communications strategy with our fundraising and funder organizing strategies, including developing funder-facing messaging and narratives, and working closely with both GGJ’s Communications and Resource Mobilization Teams.
- Support the Communications Team in developing strategy that helps demonstrate and visibilize GGJ’s impact and value as an alliance strengthening our members' infrastructure and grassroots organizing.
- Support engagement of GGJ members, including communication tactics to visibilize and uplift the work of our members.
- Provide training and mentorship to Communications Team members, and potentially other GGJ staff in communications best practices, such as simplifying language, developing clear messaging and talking points, and content creation.
- Collaborate with the Communications Team in the production of collateral such as print and digital materials, one-pagers, reports, social media content, video and audio content, and other materials as needed.
- Support Communications staff in developing an earned media strategy, including building press contact lists, engaging press, support pitching and publication of op-eds and articles.
- Evaluate communications analytics and metrics, such as social media, email, and website analytics.
Timeline and Deliverables
This work is expected to be completed in phases, with an initial five month contract, and the possibility of extension of an additional three months, for a total of eight months. We are seeking to begin this work in the beginning of September 2026.
- Phase 1 (Months 1–2)
- Provide grounded recommendations that are implementable in the short and long term and baseline communications metrics.
- Review current communications materials, messaging to members, funders and donors, digital platforms, audience reach and engagement, and website traffic.
- Conduct communication needs assessment of GGJ communications workflows, communications strategy, and Comms Team skills, strengths, and needs
- Phase 2 (Months 2–6+)
- Provide mentorship and training for GGJ Communications Team and GGJ staff - including meeting regularly with the Communications Team, and occasional meetings with other GGJ staff
- Messaging and content production. Develop messaging and narrative, support writing and editing content, produce various materials for a wide range of audiences including GGJ’s members, funders, and allies
- Support the implementation of a set of recommendations to strengthen GGJ communications strategy
Budget
$50,000–65,000 for five months with the possibility to extend the contract an additional two to three months at a prorated rate equal to the initial terms of the contract, based on performance and agreed terms of consultant and GGJ.
Desired Experience and Qualifications
- Significant experience as a communications professional, including developing high-level communications strategy, and implementing communications including narrative and messaging strategy, content creation, and materials production.
- Strong facilitation skills and experience leading strategic planning processes and project management experience.
- Fundraising knowledge and experience, or experience developing successful funder-facing materials.
- Proficient in design applications including Adobe Suite and Canva.
- An ideal candidate is fluent in English and Spanish, with experience writing and proofreading in Spanish.
- Ability to allocate sufficient time and attention to this contract.
- Demonstrated solution-oriented approach, high emotional intelligence, and ability to listen deeply to, provide support to, and follow the lead of frontline, community-based leaders.
- Experience working with grassroots organizations and frontline communities.
- Knowledge of the national landscape of grassroots organizations and the base-building sector.
- A demonstrated commitment to environmental, economic, and social justice.
- Some knowledge and understanding of GGJ framework and principles such as demilitarization, climate justice, and grassroots feminism.
- Excellent writing, speaking, and analytical skills and ability to translate analysis and complex information into persuasive writing and speaking that connect to a larger vision.
To Submit a Proposal
Please submit a proposal application including a brief cover letter, resume, 1–2 page proposal outline for the project, and at least three work samples. Your proposal should include your proposed rate and amount of hours of work for the project. Work samples must include at least one writing sample, and may include communications plans, materials produced including electronic or print materials or audiovisual materials, social media campaigns and metrics, or articles published. Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis with priority given to proposals submitted by August 19, 2026.
This RFP may be fulfilled by individual consultants or a team. If submitting an application as a team, please name your team members and the experience your team has had working together in your cover letter, include resumes of all team members, and the division of labor you propose to fulfill the project.
